The 'Get Your First Managerial Job' workshop is designed to help professionals formulate their case about why they are ready to leap from an individual contributor to a manager role to employers. This course does not teach you how to become a manager. It helps you to succeed in your job search for a managerial role.
We will begin with why you want to become a manager/leader and go from there. This course helps you to discover your narrative that you will eventually use to become successful in getting that managerial job. This intensive program focuses on what skills, mindset, and communication are needed to transition into a leadership role. Participants will work with experienced growth coaches, narrative specialists, and industry experts to align their approach to management and effectively communicate it so that they can acquire their first role in management. By the end of the program, participants will leave with a strong leadership narrative, a tailored action plan, and the confidence to seek out their first managerial opportunity.
Since our focus is your growth, all of our courses have two distinct parts:
(A) Managing one’s self
(B) Facing the world
All courses are taught by three distinct instructors, each addressing the what, how, why, which, when, where, etc., in varying degrees:
The 'Get Your First Managerial Job' course is built around three key areas, with each component taught by a specialized instructor.
Growth Coach: Focuses on how to manage the emotional challenges of stepping into a leadership role. Challenges your understanding of what leadership means and how it fits with your world.
Narrative Specialist (Personal Branding and Communication): Focuses on crafting a leadership story that resonates with hiring managers.
Subject Matter Expert (Industry-Specific Guidance): Focuses on understanding the skills and expectations of first-time managers in your industry.
The second key component of this course is learning how to build the right professional connections to secure a managerial role. To help you gain the necessary people skills, our instructors facilitate three types of relationships. Once you learn how to manage each, you will be able to retain these skills for the rest of your career:
Network Building: Participants will learn how to engage with other professionals, mentors, and industry leaders to build a network that supports their career advancement. Our role is to guide you through the process of engaging with your network effectively, but your continued effort will be needed to convert those connections into opportunities. Although we expose our students to potential employers, this is not a job guarantee program.
Recruiter Connections: The course will introduce participants to internal and external recruiters who specialize in placing candidates in managerial roles.
People at Target Employers: Through networking events and SME connections, participants will have the chance to meet people who are already working in managerial positions at target employers. The goal is to learn how to position yourself for these roles, but the journey to secure a role is ultimately yours to pursue.
By the end of this course, participants will:
Build emotional resilience: Learn to overcome the challenges of managing teams and handling the pressures of leadership, gaining insights into what it means to grow as a leader.
Develop a compelling leadership narrative: Present themselves as ready to lead, with a professional story that reflects their strengths and capabilities so that prospective employers will come forward to give them a chance to lead.
Audit skill-gaps: Understand the specific skills needed to succeed as a manager in their chosen industry and identify areas for further development.
Create a clear job search plan: Develop a personalized roadmap for landing their first managerial job, including application strategies and interview preparation.
Learn to build and maintain professional relationships: Gain the skills to establish connections with recruiters and industry leaders that will support their transition into management.
Each participant will complete the course with:
Note: In all our job search courses, we encourage our students to actively apply as soon as their Narrative Module is complete (usually by one-third of the course. Which means, we will be there with you in your journey as you look for a job.
